Riverdale Primary School chess team wins gold

It was an honour for Debby’s Bees Kings and Queens Chess Team from Riverdale Primary to be invited to the KwaZulu-Natal Police Chess Team 2019 inauguration.

Riverdale Primary was the only school within the UKhahlamba region that was invited.
Schools from Durban and surrounding areas also attended.

The Riverdale team played well and enjoyed being the part of the tournament. The exposure, networking, socialising as well as making new friends was a great experience for them. The

Riverdale Primary Chess Team Manager Mrs Gamede became emotional when one of the officials asked where she learned how to play. She recalled that her husband Mr TG Gamede taught her.

“It became our family hobby and we used to play it during our spare time. We even taught our son President Gamede from the age of five-years-old on how chess is played,” Mrs Gamede reminisced.

The KwaZulu-Natal Police Chess Team awarded the team with 10 chess boards without pieces, two chess rags with pieces, 11 gold medals as well as a trophy as a token of appreciation for the game being introduced in a rural area and encouraged the team to continue with chess so that children will be occupied positively and not engage themselves in social ills.

The team passes special thanks to Mr MM Magubane the Principal, School Governing Body, parents, the KwaZulu-Natal Police Chess Team as well as Unyaka Wakho Youth Foundation, Advocates For Change.

The team pleads with local business people or anyone willing to assist to purchase chess pieces for the 10 boards they received and other chess sets and a chess uniform for about 60 chess players including their chess co-ordinator. Contact Mrs Gamede on 082 719 5136.
