Since receiving an international flag in 2008 Eqhweni Combined School has never looked back and has sustained its achievement and currently is in its third year of platinum.
On March 20 Eqhweni hosted Bambonani and Kwamiya Primary from Bergville and Muntuza Primary from Wembezi Sakhile and in their midst were National Eco-School Co-ordinator Bridget, together with Julia, Ms Hassloar and Dolly (local Eco-school co-ordinators) .
The purpose of the day was to celebrate Water Month, and to celebrate it in style.
The day started with Julia and her team conducting a lesson to the grade seven learners on the water cycle.
After the grade seven lesson, the co- ordinators met with the Eqhweni Eco- School Committee where they engaged the committee on its work, shared ideas and discussed tips on how to sustain their achievements.
This event was followed by a workshop for all schools based on water.
Pictures of the Umgeni River were shown to the participants, as testimony of how rivers are being damaged by people.
Then during the course of the day participants were taken to the nearby river to test the quality of water.
The findings were that the water is clean because a number of animals living in water were found and the test was conducted closer to the source.
The day was concluded with an awards giving ceremony.
Muntuza was awarded an international flag, Kwa-Miya and Bambeni were awarded green flags while Eqhweni was awarded a platinum certificate and school was encouraged to hoist their flags always.
