Marthinus Klemp, the newly-crowned Pie King was elated with his victory when he managed to chew through eight pies in five minutes, one more than the reigning champion.
Mouth blistered from the searing pies, Mr Klemp was tired and full to bursting after the competition.
“I was full and sore from all the eating,” he joked. “My mouth has blisters from the warm pies.”
According to Mr Klemp, he had arrived at the Winter Festival with no intention to take part. His sister then dared him to do it, as a joke.
“It was a bet of sorts,’ he said. “So I said yes, why not? Let’s see what happens. I wasn’t expecting to win!”
He continued, “It feels really good to have won. The Oom had a great record. I knew I would have to go all out to beat him and it was close, but I managed to win.”
Asked if he would be partaking next year, Mr Klemp agreed he would have to, to defend the title.
“The title is mine now, and it is mine to defend. Anyone is welcome to come and join the competition, if they can keep up!” he laughed.
