DJ's rock the dance-floor at Newcastle Winter Festival
The term DJ stands for Disc Jockey. It is a term used to describe the masters of mixing it up, and Newcastllians were treated to three such artists during the Newcastle Winter Festival.
DJ Dizzy D, a former Newcastle resident, said it was a great honour to play in his home town, and better still, to be playing with his son, Ash the DJ.
While the father and son duo may both be mixing it up in the same trade, their styles of music has drifted apart over the years.
“Ash grew up with music all around him; his style is definitely influenced by me, but he is looking for his own genre, and developing it, not just following in my footsteps,” said Dizzy-D.
And it’s true. Being one of the youngest DJs in the country to make a name for himself, Ash the DJ has become a name many associate with some of the biggest parties in the country.
The third thriller who appeared on stage, was one of the most recognised house DJs in the nightlife world, Pretoria’s DJ Ashtro.
The self-proclaimed “ladies’ man,” is a master of trade. He seamlessly mixes tracks, and reads the crowds he plays for to perfection.
His ego is justified the moment he drops his first track on the dance floor, and the crowd rocks with the waves of his sounds.
Dizzy D complimented his friend, “Ashtro plays in clubs from Pretoria to Cape Town and people know that when he’s around, they’re going to have a party!”
Furthermore, the two are currently working on collaborations which will be released in the coming months.
Yet while the DJs loved playing in Newcastle, and hope to come back in time to come, they pleaded with residents of Newcastle to come out and have some fun.
“People see bhangra fusion, and they get the wrong idea. We are DJs; we can see what the crowd wants, and we will give them exactly that. We want to come back, and we want the people of Newcastle to be there for us,” pleaded Dizzy D.
The international producer, who worked closely with the Wal-Mart Talent Search project, is set to release a new album together with some of the artists from the project next year.
His advice for young aspiring DJs was simple, “Study hard! DJing will help you develop yourself, but you need to educate yourself. A career and a firm grounding makes a successful DJ. Never ever forget your roots.”
