Creativity flows through his veins

Artist, Mbongeni Msani has his roots buried deep into the creative grounds of Newcastle and is planning on staying right here.

Odds are, you have seen Mbongeni’s artwork and this artist is sure to impress.

In 2009 Mbongeni relocated to oSizweni from Durban and he has found inspiration in our town for quite some time.

Mbongeni’s love for art started at a very young age.

“While I was still in crèche, I started drawing cartoons,” he said.

Mbongeni has been developing his style with time and has discovered even many more avenues to express himself.

As a young and talented artist, Mbongeni initially only used pencil as a medium, but in 2006 he saw artists using paint and became inspired in doing so as well.

Limited resources have never quelled Mbongeni’s creativity. “I use all types of mediums, even metal,” he said.

Mbongeni has found very creative ways to keep his art interesting and fresh.

“I use cans and create art out of it. It is my new style and I really enjoy it.”

Mbongeni has a passion for his work and is on a mission to change people’s view of art and its place in Newcastle.

“I want people in Newcastle to know us as artists and to appreciate what we do,” he said. “Art is not so much appreciated here like it is in other cities and I want to change that,” he continued.

“Art is my life,” Mbongeni said proudly. “I do what I love to make a living.”

Mbongeni knows the importance of art and education. “I focus on a school in oSizweni for developing young talent. Sometimes teachers need a helping hand.

Schools often focus more on theory than the practical and I believe it should be turned around,” he concluded.
