10 Things to do in Newcastle during the holidays
Dedicated to the people of our tiny town who have 'nothing to do', here is a list of things to do just about anywhere.

Newcastle might not have nightclubs like Pretoria or beautiful beaches like Durban, but there’s something that sets us apart from the rest.
Besides having the best journalists yet, Newcastle is unique because we love to hate our charming little town.
Dedicated to the people of our tiny town who have ‘nothing to do’, here is a list of things to do just about anywhere.
It might not be what you expected, by here goes…
1. Money matters in the spin of things, so set a Christmas budget and actually stick to it. January is a long way away!
2. Round up a group of friends and go Christmas carolling. Granted, you and your crew might not be the next South Africa’s Got Talent winners, but it will be a blast having good, clean fun.
3. There’s probably a box of toys right at the back of your garage that you’ll never open again. Take your unwanted toys to one of Newcastle’s children’s homes or shelters. At least then you’ll be putting a smile on someone’s face.
4. Take your children to see Santa Claus. This is a tradition that will never get old. Nothing is more mesmerising and exciting than meeting Santa for the very first time.
5. Get crafty and creative with the family and make your own Christmas cards. Not only is this a great way to bond with your loved ones, it also saves money. Christmas cards are ridiculously expensive, so get your DIY on.
6. Make Christmas dinner from scratch. Slaving over a hot stove might not be your idea of fun, but the smile on your family’s face will make it all worthwhile.
7. Detox from your devices. The urge to upload a Christmas selfie will be unbearable, but make it work for the sake of spending quality time with the people you care about.
8. Avoid arguments. Happy wife; happy life. Enough said.
9. Do something unexpected. Whether your dream is to help a stranger or tell the sibling you’ve been fighting with all year that you love them, just do something out of character.
10. This an oldie, but a goodie. Kiss someone underneath the mistletoe. Yeah, I know it seems corny, but you thank me later!
On that note, the Newcastle Advertiser wishes you and your family a very Merry Christmas!
