Special Olympics South Africa hosted a Healthy Athlete Screening for children and adults with intellectual disabilities on Saturday, August 29, at Tugela High School.

The annual programme was initiated 15 years ago to address the causes and effects of poor health, through free health screenings in seven medical disciplines.

Through the help of medical specialists, physicians and professionals in Dentistry, Optometry, Podiatry and Physiotherapy offering their services at no cost the programme, it has become the largest global public health organisation dedicated to serving people with intellectual disabilities.

The screening gives athletes the opportunity to improve their ability to train and compete in Special Olympics, and includes early discovery of medical unfitness and provides the necessary follow ups and referrals for the athlete to receive medical attention.
