KHONIE Mapeka is not your average gogo next door.
This bubbly 62 year-old is making waves in the entertainment industry as a DJ, yes you read right, a 62 year-old DJ.
Gogo Khonie or DJ Gogo as she is now known to many local good time lovers started her DJ’ing career back in 2009 with just one microphone and one speaker.
“ I was a professional paramedic before taking on the entertainment industry,” says the mother of four proudly.
Khonie says that she started doing gigs after wanting to make a few rands on the side when she was off her paramedic duties.
“I wanted to make extra money but did not want to become just another woman selling tomatoes,” she said.
She retired from her job as a paramedic in 2009 and decided to use the money she got from her retirement package to fund her dream to become a sensational entertainer.
Her love for music started when she was a drummer at a Zion church during her younger years and although she took a different career path, she always knew in her heart of hearts that music was what she wanted to do professionally.
“I can maintain my house, put food on the table and I am doing what I love,” she beams.
The path has not always been easy, as she is sometimes not taken seriously by some of the young people.
“Sometimes I feel underestimated but I have never let this discourage me,” says DJ Gogo.
Despite minor setbacks, this local DJ says that she loves every minute of her job and has received great response from the community, as she is currently fully booked for the entire festive season.
