Little did she know her dream would lead her to CANSA, as the association’s new community mobiliser fund-raiser.

“Being a part of CANSA allows me to make a positive difference in the community as a whole, and touch people’s lives,” she said.

Hailing from Colenso, Siphelelisiwe is determined to be successful in her new career.

“While Newcastle is new to me, my colleague, Sherika Lallie, has been very supportive and I am prepared to start developing new programmes for CANSA in town.”

Siphelelisiwe wants to change the mindset of people about cancer.

“A lot of black people don’t think they can get cancer. I want to be able to go into the community and educate people cancer is not a white man’s sickness.”

Education is but one facet of her career she will be focusing on. Fund-raising will will also take up a lot of her time.

“We will be hosting the Sanlam CANSA Golf Challenge on June 8 at the Newcastle Golf Club, and are inviting the community to support us.”
