However, there are times when you can’t attend a wedding, no matter how close you are to the couple.

While there are valid reasons on why you can’t attend a wedding ceremony, such as financial constraints and prior obligations, there are five reasons why you should never skip a wedding:

1. You don’t like the bride/groom

It is your best friend’s wedding, but you don’t like their future spouse. Whether you don’t like the way they talk, chew their food or the purple tracksuit they wear on Sunday mornings, it is no excuse to skip the wedding.

2. You feel awkward about being single

While family and friends are getting married left, right and centre, you have found yourself still flying solo. This might feel awkward at a wedding, but the chances of you being the only single person at the ceremony is slim. Skipping a loved one’s wedding because your are single is not a valid reason at all.

3. They did not go to your wedding

Not going to someone’s wedding simply because they did not go to yours is a tad juvenile. While it might seem they skipped your big day for no apparent reason, the fact that you were invited to their special day, shows that you still play a major role in their lives.

4. Your favourite sport team is playing

Skipping a family member or friend’s wedding day to watch your favourite sport team play a match is not acceptable, especially if you were notified well in advance of the wedding. Unless you purchased the ticket to watch the game two months prior to the wedding, you can always record the match.

5. You forgot

This is possibly one of the worst reasons to ever skip a wedding, as this means that you responded to your RSVP, notifying the couple you would attend. Not only do the couple now have to fork out the cash to cover the expenses at the reception, but it will leave them with a sour taste that their friend or family member did not care enough to remember their special day.
