Valentine’s Day sweets for your sweet

Give a gift from the heart this Valentine's Day - get into the kitchen and start cooking!

A Valentine’s Day gift is always better when it’s from the heart.

Perhaps the greatest expression of one’s adoration is a delicious home-made treat, considering the time and effort spent in the kitchen.

That also doesn’t mean breaking the bank on February 14.

Here are a few tasty, sweet eats your loved one won’t help be impressed by, and won’t put you into overdraft:

Mini Hot Chocolate Doughnuts – thesweetchick.com

This recipe takes some time and a touch of skill to pull off, but fortunately that’s the most of your worries. The base of the doughnuts can be found in most kitchens, and the only expense here is on the frosting.

Red Velvet Popcorn – sarahhearts.com

Take the experience of sweet and salty to a romantic new level. You’ll need to either buy or make a red velvet cake, but cupcakes from the local store work just as well.

Valentine Rice Krispies Treats – lisakisch.typepad.com

A simple recipe with a Valentine’s Day twist. Rice Krispies treats are always a hit, gently crunchy, sticky and oh so sweet!

Chef John’s Lava Cake – allrecipes.com

Valentine’s Day is all about the gooey confession of love. This recipe emulates that oozing sweetness in chocolate form. This decadent dessert is sure to impress.

Chocolate Brownie Bark – justataste.com

Another tasty morsel made with common ingredients.

The ingredients:

A half cup of flour

A quarter teaspoon of salt

A quarter teaspoon of baking soda

Two large egg whites

One cup of sugar

Two tablespoons of cocoa powder

A quarter cup of vegetable oil

A half teaspoon of vanilla extract

One tablespoon of milk powder

One cup of chocolate chips

A half teaspoon of espresso powder (optional)

The method

Preheat the oven to 160 degrees Celsius. Line a baking sheet or roll pan with parchment paper.

In a small bowl, whisk together the flour, salt and baking soda.

In a separate medium bowl, whisk the egg whites until light and frothy. Add the sugar, cocoa, espresso powder, oil and vanilla. Whisk until smooth.

Whisk the milk powder into the egg mixture, then whisk in the flour mixture until combined. Stir in half of the chocolate chips.

Pour the batter onto the parchment paper. Using a spatula, spread the batter as thinly as possible, then sprinkle over the remaining chocolate chips.

Bake for 20 minutes, then remove from the oven. Use a sharp knife to cut the bark into squares, but DO NOT separate. Allow the bark to cool completely before breaking the pieces apart.
