After South Africa’s first national democratic elections were held in April 1994, Nelson Mandela was sworn in as South Africa’s first black president at the Union Buildings.
After being unanimously elected by parliament, Madiba replaced F.W. de Klerk, of the National Party.
His inauguration as the new South African leader not only marked the end of the Apartheid era, but united a nation.

A year prior to his inauguration Mandela also received the Nobel Prize for peace along with then president Frederik Willem (FW) de Klerk “for their work for the peaceful termination of the apartheid regime, and for laying the foundations for a new democratic South Africa.”

This year on July 18, the world will be celebrating Nelson Mandela Day and remembering the legacy of love had left behind.
