Silence a killer, women’s conference hears
"We have involved people who have experience and knowledge in psychological problems and are also in the medical field to assist victims by directing them to the right channels of aid."
The Qhakaza seminar brought together mothers and daughters in a bid to empower young women. Qhakaza is a Nguni word for ‘Shine and brightness against all odds’.
Nozipho Njilo, the host of the event said: “This seminar provides information and tools to fight stigmas such as poverty and self-esteem issues. Our guest of honour was former first lady Mantuli – Zuma. She spoke about the challenges faced by women in marriage and also encouraged women to learn to stand up for themselves and not to be defeated by their circumstances. We also had a young lady who was sexually assaulted at a young age, who shared her story and experience.”
Those who attended said it was an eye-opening seminar as young women were able to talk about the struggles they face on a daily basis. The Qhakaza initiative will be an ongoing programme that will assist women, in general, in opening up regarding their obstacles and try to find help for them.

“We have involved people who have experience and knowledge in psychological problems and are also in the medical field to assist victims by directing them to the right channels of aid.”
“We are hoping and pleading that more people come forward and offer their assistance especially in creating awareness. Silence is a killer and a great mother was once a weak child, let us rise above rape, abuse, assault and mostly depression and let’s change gears for success. Build a better life for you,” concluded Nozipho.
