Mrs Peerbhay has more than 20 herbs in her garden and knows the specific uses for each. She completed a course in Phytotherapy (professional medical herbalism) and uses her knowledge to help others who have opt to use herbs for symptoms varying from depression to diarrhoea.

“I like to focus on common herbs and feel safer using the herbs that I know. Ever since I completed the course, I value herbs and don’t ever waste a leaf,” said Mrs Peerbhay.

While studying, Mrs Peerbhay worked closely with beauty entrepreneur Joan Symons and attended most of the courses.

“My mentors are Joan Symons and Patrick Holford who is a world renowned nutritionist,” added Mrs Peerbhay.

If you are keen on starting a herb garden, Mrs Peerbhay’s top two tips are making organic compost and identifying the herbs you want to plant.

This month she shares the advantages and uses of these herbs:
1. Alfalfa (lucerne) – Lowers cholesterol and blood pressure levels. It also helps balance one’s PH levels by getting rid of acid. It is also useful for diabetes, dealing with menopause, constipation and gastroesophageal reflux disease. Alfalfa also has high levels of chlorophyll and thereby prevents cancer. It is also a great source of vitamin K; it promotes blood clotting, stops nose bleeds and uterine bleeding. Avoid during pregnancy and breast feeding.

Artemisia Afra – wildeals – wormwood.

2. Artemisia Afra – wildeals – wormwood – The leaves can be used to help coughs, cold and ‘flu, fevers, loss of appetite and intestinal worms. Fresh leaves inserted into the nostril can alleviate blocked nasal passages.
