Dear Readers,

Torrential downpours brought welcome relief to parched lands these last few weeks.

While many, including myself, are thankful for the rains, it also highlighted the many infrastructural shortcomings plaguing Newcastle.

Over the past few months, the Newcastle Municipality began ‘fixing’ intersections in the CBD and residential areas, ostensibly to repair burst/leaking pipes.

While commendable, the consequences thereof equated to consternation and anger from residents who have been left to navigate the mess left behind.

I too, have been forced to drive on the pavement near my home, where the municipality attended to a burst pipe months ago and simply covered the resulting road damage with sand, which has begun caving in.

There are many such areas scattered throughout the town.

With the rains this week came reports of heavy flooding. Along with affected businesses, service organisations like La Gratitude Home for the Aged were also hit hard.

With damage to the structure and the home itself, staff and residents chose to remain positive in the face of Mother Nature’s challenge.

In an inspiring twist, the home’s occupants came together and turned the clean-up into an exercise of unity and hope, despite the destruction.

A positive attitude ultimately triumphs in the direst of circumstances. Read more about the floods and La Gratitude’s positive outlook in this week’s edition.
