A senseless tragedy hits residents hard

This week, we spoke to a few organisations about this issue, and we hope to reach a wide audience in order to help young mothers who may feel trapped in their circumstance, and without hope.

Dear Readers,

By the time you pick up this copy of the Newcastle Advertiser we will be preparing for the annual State Of the Town Address (SOTA).

This year, with all the controversy surrounding the newly-elected mayor, many were sceptical about whether SOTA 2019 would actually take place, after it was postponed following the mayor being taken into custody, and his subsequent court appearances. Our reporters will be tweeting live from #SOTA19, so be sure to follow us on Facebook and Twitter for up-to-date reports as the address is delivered.

For those of you who diligently follow us on social media, you would have been just as heartbroken as I was, to read about a deceased baby being found in a municipal bin in the CBD last week. I thank the owner of the business, where the bin was located, for coming to us to highlight this tragedy.

It was something which affected our journalists severely. As a new parent, this senseless act really traumatised me. There are so many other options for children and babies that are not wanted. Our readers were incensed and called for justice to take its course.

This week, we spoke to a few organisations about this issue, and we hope to reach a wide audience in order to help young mothers who may feel trapped in their circumstance, and without hope.

In this jam-packed edition you can also look forward to vibrant photos from the Iskcon Festival of Chariots, an annual event which brightens up the streets of Newcastle.

We also have a strong Sport Section – golf, soccer, bowls and a beautiful selection of photos from a swimming gala. For those planning to travel this Easter, our special feature is crammed with information to ensure you pack wisely, have all the necessary equipment for an emergency, and how to keep your little ones entertained.

As always, I am open to feedback and constructive criticism.
