VAC athletes prepare for Comrades with strong performances

VAC runners deliver impressive performances at marathons and training events across South Africa.

It’s been another busy and exciting week for Vryheid Athletic Club (VAC), with our club and athletes truly shining this year. Our runners continue to compete in races across the country, covering a wide range of distances with great determination and success.

VAC athletes compete at Loskop Marathon

On April 25, three of our athletes travelled to Middelburg to take part in the Loskop Marathon. Mbalenhle Buthelezi completed the 21.1 km race in a time of 3:43:13. Hlobi Madida and Simphiwe Buthelezi tackled the ultra marathon, with Hlobi finishing strongly in 4:41:01 and Simphiwe crossing the line in 5:04:25.

Strong performances at Highveld and Durban marathons

The first weekend of May proved to be another action-packed one for our members. Matt Cilliers competed in the Highveld Marathon in Ermelo, achieving an excellent time of 3:58:00 and securing his Comrades qualifier.

At the same time, several members travelled to Durban to participate in the Durban International Marathon. In the 10 km race, Simphiwe Magubane finished in 55:08, while Sindy Swanepoel followed closely in 55:49, placing 17th in her category.

First marathon achievement celebrated

In the marathon (42.2 km), Lunganie Patrick delivered an outstanding performance, finishing in 3:03:22. Marlene van Niekerk completed her very first marathon in a commendable time of 4:18:29 — a fantastic achievement.

Traditional Comrades training run hosted

Closer to home, on May 2 the club hosted its traditional 50 km Comrades training run this past weekend. Runners set off at 04:00 on Saturday morning from the Triangle Store, covering a challenging route along the Natal Spa road, looping back to the Triangle, continuing onto Leeuwnek Road, and finishing with a final turnaround stretch.
