Around 500 learners from five schools attended a Sports Against Crime event at Kranskop Sports Fields on Friday, August 14, aimed at raising awareness of crime prevention and challenges facing young people.

The event brought together government departments, community organisations and sponsors to engage learners through sport and promote safer choices.

Learners warned about crime

Social Crime Coordinator Sgt Mkhize, who initiated the programme, addressed learners about drug abuse, bullying, assault and the possession and use of dangerous weapons.

Learners were encouraged to avoid criminal activity, make responsible choices and seek help when facing challenges that could threaten their safety and future.

Kranskop SAPS station commander Lt-Col M Ramkison thanked the stakeholders and sponsors who supported the event, including Aquellé, Makolweni Project and Siyabonga Supermarket.

Ramkison also warned learners about the long-term consequences of criminal behaviour, particularly the impact a criminal record could have on future education and career opportunities.

The event was supported by the Department of Education, the Department of Social Development, Makolweni Project, Siyabonga Supermarket and Aquellé.

Learners from Sokheni Secondary School, Sisekelo Secondary School, Gcothoyi Secondary School, Makhedama Secondary School and Ophofini Secondary School participated in the event.
