Crater Cruise hits the gravel roads of Parys

The Crater Cruise Gravel is more than just a race—it's a celebration of Parys as a premier destination for sport and tourism.

Parys is once again gearing up to host one of the most anticipated events on South Africa’s cycling calendar—the Crater Cruise Gravel Race, now proudly relaunched and ready to make waves. Set for June 8, this iconic race brings together grit, endurance and scenic beauty in one unforgettable gravel adventure.

Thanks to an incredible group of local sponsors and supporters—including Parys Info, Stonehenge, Harcourts Properties, Parys Multisport, Plum Tree, Kapp Works, Die Jaagluiperde, Big Rock Cycling School, Koedoeslaagte Trail Park, and title sponsor Anatomic Sportswear—the Crater Cruise is ready to raise its flag once more. The race promises to draw more than 350 top-level cyclists to Parys, with elite riders tackling a formidable 145km gravel route through the Vredefort Dome landscape. With R75 000 in prize money up for grabs, the level of competition is expected to be fierce.

Also on offer are the challenging 92km and 50km routes, ensuring that every rider—from seasoned competitors to weekend warriors—has a chance to test their mettle. Local couple Michelle and Johan Huyser were the very first to sign up when entries opened online in March, setting the tone for an enthusiastic community response.

What truly makes this event special for Parys is the spotlight on local talent. Cheer on hometown hero Johan de Villiers (riding for the Tshenolo Pro-Cycling Team), the always-competitive youth rider, Rico Vorster, and rising sub-junior star Christiaan Kapp as they take on South Africa’s best.

Let’s show our support and give these athletes a home-ground advantage.
