Baba Tjeko brings African narratives to the world’s biggest art platforms
Local artist Baba Tjeko wants to develop young creative talent in Tumahole, Parys, and neighbouring Free State towns.
Parys-based contemporary artist, Baba Tjeko, is making big strides in the global art world. Having started his career as a cartoonist, illustrator, and designer, Baba transitioned to commercial art, which saw him collaborate with big brands such as Nespresso, Mini South Africa, Stella Artois, and BoConcept, among others.
Today, he is a celebrated multidisciplinary artist represented by SMAC, an internationally renowned art gallery based in Cape Town and Stellenbosch.
Baba is set to participate in the upcoming Investec Cape Town Art Fair on February 20-22. Soon afterward, his large-scale paintings will be shown in Art Basel Hong Kong, China, in March. In December 2025 through SMAC gallery, Baba had a sold out exhibition at Art Basel Miami in the United States of America.

“To be featured on a great platform such as Art Basel is a big deal in an artist’s career. The aim is to be an important global voice where art is tackling socio-economic issues and shaping the current discourse,” he said.
Baba’s work explores the connection between the past and present by placing side by side traditional oil paintings inspired by nostalgic photography with digitally conceived illustrations influenced by fashion and social media culture.
Baba is currently working on a plan to help develop young creative talent in Tumahole, Parys, and neighbouring Free State towns. He believes that you can build success and make an impact in your hometown without relocating to major cities like Johannesburg, Cape Town, or New York.=-
