Robbery spells devastating setback for SPCA Parys

The financial strain caused by the robbery also means less resources for essential items such as cat and dog food, cat litter and blankets, all of which will be welcomed at this time.

In the early hours of this morning, Sunday, April 19, a robbery took place at the premises of SPCA Parys on Abattoir Street, Parys.

Among the losses suffered was the society’s only vehicle, which had just recently been returned to service after months awaiting an engine replacement.

None of the staff or the animals in the SPCA’s care were harmed, but significant damage has been done to the roof, and items of value used to carry out the SPCA’s critical role in the community, were stolen.

The vehicle tracking service was able to track the vehicle to Sebokeng, then Orange Farm before the signal was lost.

In a statement this morning the SPCA committee said it acknowledges that it is unlikely the vehicle will be recovered and needs to turn immediate attention to fundraising for a replacement. To this end, a Back a Buddy campaign will be launched shortly, appealing for public support.

For a small organisation with so few resources, a broad area to service and such a huge dependence on the contributions of the community, this is a significant and disheartening setback, just adding to the strain of keeping the doors open.

The committee appealed once again for the generosity of the public to support the Back a Buddy campaign when launched, and for assistance to repair and replace what was broken and stolen in the robbery. This includes roof sheeting and ceiling board, security cameras, laptops, safes and locks.

The financial strain caused by the robbery also means less resources for essential items such as cat and dog food, cat litter and blankets, all of which will be welcomed at this time.
