Understanding the voter registration verification process
After you register to vote or update your details, your information goes through a verification process to ensure that the voters’ roll remains accurate and up to date.
The verification process includes:
- Checking your submitted registration details
- Confirming your information against the required records
- Ensuring that you are assigned to the correct voting district
- Updating the voters’ roll with verified information
Keeping your registration details, accurate helps ensure that eligible South Africans are correctly recorded and ready to participate in the 2026 Local Government Elections.
Final registration weekend
If you don’t want to register online, there is still one final opportunity to register in person at voting stations during the IEC’s final voter registration weekend on 1–2 August between, ahead of the municipal elections.

When you go to a voting station to register
- you only need your South African ID document (green ID book or
- smart ID card) or a valid Temporary Identity Certificate.
- you do not need proof of address, although you will be asked to provide your residential address.
Also remember that, unlike a national election, you cannot vote at just any voting station during a municipal election. You must vote at the voting station where you are registered.
