Parys SPCA, in collaboration with the National Council of SPCAs (NSPCA), intervened to rescue 200 chickens that were being kept in unacceptable conditions in the Vaaloewer area.
The chickens had allegedly been left without food or water.

Last week’s intervention followed the owner’s failure to comply with instructions issued by the SPCA to improve the animals’ living conditions.

With the assistance of a qualified NSPCA inspector, a warrant authorising the removal of the chickens was obtained. Within hours, the chickens were removed from the property and cared for. A complaint of animal cruelty has been laid with the SAPS.

This was an emotional and resource-intensive process, and the Parys SPCA volunteer committee member who took on the matter is commended for his dedicated efforts.

Parys SPCA suffered a devastating setback in April this year when its only vehicle was stolen during a robbery.

With a large jurisdictional area to attend to, they are grateful to an anonymous donor for loaning the organisation a bakkie, which made this intervention possible.

Parys SPCA also thanked the public for their continued support of the BackaBuddy campaign as the organisation gets closer to its goal of purchasing their own vehicle to strengthen its inspectorate.
