After several complaints about the disgusting sight of kilometres of refuse lining Dover Road on the way to the official dumping site for Parys, the executive mayor of Ngwathe, Ms Joey Mochela and CWP participants held a cleaning campaign on the stretch of road on Monday. This intervention includes stakeholder involvement in keeping Ngwathe clean, said the Ngwathe spokesperson, Steve Naale. Many concerns have been raised on a number of occasions about the safety and health risk on this road. The lack of management at the official landfill site over a number of years has been blamed for this situation. Some time ago, the rubbish was gathered into heaps but it was never collected or removed.
Meanwhile, residents keep on dumping their household refuse and building material literally anywhere alongside the road.
With no management of the dumping site, the illegal dumping will continue, polluting not only the environment and causing a risk of fire, but also polluting the water sources that flow directly into the Vaal River.
