The University in a statement said that it is concerned about the violence on the campus where a group of senior students allegedly assaulted other students and damaged university property. This following a call from the South African Union of Students to embark on a national shutdown of all universities.

The NWU management is extremely concerned about the violence on the campus. Following a call from the South African Union of Students (SAUS) to embark on a national shutdown of all universities,

The campus will be closed till further notice and students had to leave campus by 15:00 today, 28 January.
