Bodies recovered after tragedy during baptism ceremony

Police and emergency services have issued a strict warning to stay out of the river and away from the river bank with the water level of the Vaal River that will rise substantially over the next 24 hours.

All three bodies of the men who drowned in the Vaal River near the suspension bridge in Parys on Sunday 6 November, have been recovered. The men were from Potchefstroom.

The tragedy occurred during a baptism ceremony when the men were swept away at the rapids near the rocks close to the historical bridge.

The first body was found late on Wednesday afternoon (November 12) in the river near Fick Street. The second body was recovered on November 13, at the Mimosa Gardens.

Shortly afterwards, the third victim was found about 200 metres from where the first body was discovered by members of the Sasolburg Police K9 Search and Rescue Unit.

The incident has once again raised concerns about safety awareness, especially in rivers, ahead of the upcoming Festive Season and the initiation period starting November 29 till January 16.

With the heavy rain the past week and the water level of the Vaal Rivier expected to rise substantially with five sluice gates opened at Vaal Dam on Monday morning, people are urged to stay away from the river bank and out of the water, even during religious ceremonies.

During flood situations rivers are unpredictable, especially if you are not familiar with river conditions and do not have the necessary training.

  • Respect water and keep its dangers in mind.
  •  Pay attention to warnings and signs near rivers, lakes, or swimming pools, and obey the rules.
  •  Know where to get help if needed.
  • Alcohol and water safety definitely do not go together.
  • Do not walk along the edges of a river or dam.
  • If you are not trained in lifesaving or rescue techniques, call for help immediately rather than trying to rescue the person yourself.
  • Tubes and inflatable mattresses are very dangerous in the water because they create a false sense of security and safety, especially if you are not accompanied by a trained guide.
  • The most dangerous time during a picnic is when you arrive, as parents are busy unpacking and children may wander off to explore.
