Farmers Market initiative connects community with local producers

The first Parys Farmers Market is on May 9 at the Parys Info & Tourism premises in Breë Street.

A new community-driven initiative is taking root in Parys, bringing together local farmers, producers, and residents through a shared vision of connection, sustainability, and growth.

The Parys Farmers Market, an initiative of the Parys Agricultural Network (PAN), is set to launch as a monthly gathering where the community can meet the people behind their food, support local enterprise, and experience the richness of the region’s agricultural offering.

More than just a marketplace, the event is designed to create meaningful relationships between producers and the community. Visitors will have the opportunity to engage directly with farmers, learn how their food is grown, and gain a deeper appreciation for the journey from soil to table, every second Saturday of the month, starting on May 9, from 10:30-13:00 at 85 Breë Street.

A platform for local farmers

At its core, the market exists to empower local producers by giving them direct access to customers, reducing barriers to entry, and creating a consistent platform for growth. For many small-scale and emerging farmers, opportunities to showcase and sell their products can be limited—this initiative aims to change that.

Jacques Mutevelian, Vision Lead from Breakthrough Land NPC, explains: “The farmers market is really the final piece of the puzzle in ensuring that local farmers have a sustainable opportunity to generate income for themselves and their families. This is about meaningful economic impact and supporting skills development across our region. My hope is that the wider community will get behind it and be part of something that truly makes a difference.”

Building food security through community

The initiative also plays a vital role in strengthening local food security. By encouraging local production and consumption, the market helps build a more resilient food system—one that benefits both producers and consumers. In addition, the network is exploring ways to support community-based projects with fresh produce, ensuring that vulnerable households can access nutritious food with dignity.

More than a market

The Parys Farmers Market is part of a broader vision led by PAN to develop a sustainable agricultural ecosystem in the region. This includes:
* Creating pathways for mentorship and skills development
* Supporting apprenticeship and micro-business opportunities
* Encouraging shared resources and economies of scale
* Connecting farmers to new markets and growth opportunities
* Creating partnerships with businesses and organisations including Parys Info and Tourism Centre, Breakthrough Land NPC, Gift Poli Foundation and Phehellang Community Nutrition Centre (Tumahole).

Come meet your local farmers

Residents are encouraged to come along, explore the market, and meet the farmers who are shaping the future of local agriculture.

The event promises fresh produce, locally made goods, and a welcoming, family-friendly atmosphere.
