According to the South African National Weather Service cloudy and cold to cool conditions are expected today over the central and eastern parts of South Africa, with 30–60% showers and rain, increasing to 80% over the south-eastern and eastern regions.

 Snow is expected in the mountainous areas of the Eastern Cape, KwaZulu-Natal, Mpumalanga and the Free State.

Residents in affected areas are urged to keep warm, keep safe and exercise caution when travelling.

Traffic update

• The R56 Kokstad towards Matatiele is open but wet. Continuous rainfall is expected. Drive with caution.
• Currently no reports of snow in Gauteng. However reports of rain in various areas have been received.
• N11 Amajuba – snow. Caution – drive carefully.

• N6 Penhoek Pass – closed between Komani (Queenstown) and Jamestown.
• N9 Lootsberg Pass – closed between Graaff-Reinet and Middelburg.
• R58 Barkly Pass – closed between Elliot and Barkly East.
• Boesmanshoek Pass – closed between Sterkstroom and Molteno.

Western Cape
• Swartberg Pass – closed due to snow.
• Mont Rochelle/Franschhoek Road – closed due to snow.

Exercise extreme caution

The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has urged motorists to exercise extreme caution and postpone non-essential journeys as severe winter weather continues to disrupt road conditions across several provinces.

Heavy snowfall, black ice, sleet, freezing rain and poor visibility are creating hazardous conditions, particularly along mountain passes and major routes.
