The land of craters
It's pothole dodging here, there and everywhere.
I write about craters all the time but not this sort of crater. Still, I suppose motorists get into the right state of mind to hear all about the world’s biggest meteorite crater, right here in the heart of South Africa.
It seems that the roads departments of provinces and municipalities have lost interest. Part of our Kopjeskraal Road was repaired – Hallelujah! – just in time to allow ANC conference-goers smooth access. Surprise! What a coincidence.
Jokes aside, the Kopjeskraal road on the Northwest side of the Vaal is a vital tourism artery. It is heavily used by buses and cars bringing business to lodges all along the river front and into the Dome Bergland. Right now it’s a big turnoff and is hurting tourism, not to mention farming.

I am choosing to ride my bike to go shopping in Parys: it’s easier to avoid the craters (and healthier).
But for the rest it’s pothole dodging here, there and everywhere. Every rainstorm makes it worse. We’re going to fill the potholes outside our gates but can do no more.
And why should taxpayers have to, anyway?
