WATCH: Defence force Rooikat crashes on N1

The Rooikat can be seen overtaking a vehicle, after which it crashes into a side barrier of the highway near Bloemfontein.

Video footage of a SANDF vehicle crashing on the N1 near Bloemfontein has gone viral.

In the video, a Rooikat vehicle can be seen overtaking another vehicle.

According to the timestamp on the video footage, the incident was recorded on Saturday. Soon thereafter it appears that the driver loses control over the vehicle which then crashes into a barrier.

The Citizen reports dashcam footage of the incident and photos taken by passersby were shared on social media.

In the meantime Lowvelder has reported a heavy military presence in Mbombela due to Armed Forces Day which is celebrated on February 21.

Both President Cyril Ramaphosa and the commander-in-chief of the SANDF were in the city on Monday to commemorate the day.

However, it is unclear whether the Rooikat was travelling to Mbombela to take part in the festivities.

According to WeaponSystems.net the Rooikat was developed in the 1980s. “Due to its powerful armament it may double as a tank destroyer.”

Rooikat is the Afrikaans word for the African lynx.
