A Successful School blood drive competition in Potchefstroom
SANBS thanks Potchefstroom Gimnasium, Hoër Volkskool, and all participants for their support during the blood drive competition.

South African National Blood Service (SANBS) coordinated a school blood drive competition between Potchefstroom Gimnasium and Hoër Volkskool on 24 and 25 April 2024 to promote altruism and community engagement. The challenge, targeting both learners and parents, sought to collect 200 units of blood, with each school responsible for securing 100 units.

The schools’ meticulous planning and enthusiastic acceptance of the challenge set a promising tone for the event. On 24 April, Potchefstroom Gimnasium took up the challenge with infectious enthusiasm. Learners, driven by a sense of purpose, eagerly responded to the call to donate blood. Parents rallied behind their children, contributing to the school’s cause. The day ended with Potchefstroom Gimnasium contributing a remarkable 121 units of blood. The momentum continued on Thursday, 25 April, as Hoër Volkskool welcomed the SANBS team. Excitement radiated as learners eagerly queued up to donate blood, encouraging their peers to join in the noble endeavour. The immense support from parents further underscored the community’s commitment to the cause.

By the end of the day, Hoër Volkskool had collected an impressive 152 units of blood. The resounding success of the blood drive contest testified to the collective efforts and generosity of both schools. Amid the backdrop of friendly rivalry, a spirit of camaraderie prevailed, uniting students, parents, and staff in a shared mission to save lives. In reflecting on this achievement, it is essential to acknowledge the instrumental role of two individuals in facilitating the success of the blood drives. F.J. De Cock from Potchefstroom Gimnasium and Elsabe De Klerk from Hoër Volkskool demonstrated exceptional leadership and dedication, serving as catalysts for mobilising their respective communities.
