Police – ‘We are coming for them’

‘The drug lords must beware, we are coming for them.’

‘The drug lords must beware, we are coming for them.’

These were the impassioned words of Brig. Sebang Molate, the station commander of the Potchefstroom police station on Thursday, 11 May.

Her excitement arose from the first-of-its-kind operation that was staged in Potchefstroom. It saw police from all over the country coming together to combat crime in the city.
Over 40 horses from mounted units from as far away as Cape Town were utilised to carry out crime prevention and improved visible policing.

‘For the most part, the horses will be deployed to areas where crime is more of a problem than elsewhere, such as the CBD and the Bult,’ said Molate. During the operation, search warrants were obtained and a number of premises were raided. Large groups of police were also on the hunt for drugs. Molate was extremely excited about the operation and the positive effect it would have on crime in Potchefstroom.

‘Drugs are a big problem here. They destroy our youth and generate all kinds of other crime and these operations will, therefore, be ongoing,’ she said.

The programme began with a crime awareness campaign in Ikageng followed by the operation in town. Potchefstroom was chosen for the operation because it is in a particularly vulnerable position, being close to Johannesburg with easy access to the N12 that runs right through the city.
