As Women’s Month draws to a close, two women have reported incidents of rape by men they know well.

In the first instance, the 33-year-old woman alleges that she and her boyfriend left a tavern at about 22:15 on Saturday night and agreed to sleep in their own separate beds. The 30-year-old suspect made sure that the woman was safely inside her shack before leaving. The woman told the Ikageng SAPS spokesperson, Sgt Kelebogile Trom, that she heard a knock on the door a few minutes later. The person identified himself as her boyfriend but she refused to let him in because, she said, he was drunk. He then broke down the door and gained entry. He switched on the light, pulled off the blankets, undressed her and raped her.
According to the victim, she tried to push him off but he overpowered her. ‘After raping her, he fell asleep and proceeded to rape her again later that night. She says this was not the first time that he had slept with her without her consent. The suspect has since been arrested.
In the second incident, a 30-year-old woman was allegedly raped by her sister’s boyfriend of the same age in Baipei, Promosa in February. She only reported the incident recently. According to Trom, the man is alleged to have demanded sex from her on 7 February while his girlfriend was away. ‘She was washing the dishes in the morning when the suspect demanded sex and claimed to love her. The woman refused but he kept on pestering her. He eventually grabbed her and dragged her to the bedroom. Despite her resisting, he overpowered her, undressed her and raped her. He, too, is currently in police custody.
