The Department of Community Safety in J.B. Marks Local Municipality wishes to invite the community to a prayer service at the Chris Hani community hall in Sarafina at 09:00 this Friday.
According to Sello Cele, the chief community safety and liaison officer, this comes in the wake of the social ills that have plagued Ikageng lately.
These range from gangsterism, gruesome murders, domestic violence, rape, sexual offences to substance abuse. ‘This is an effort to seek divine intervention from the Almighty God,’ he said.
Cele says young people initiated the idea of a prayer service. They approached him and expressed their concern about what is happening in their area.
‘We have done everything possible to combat crime and we now have to surrender to God to intervene’.
The manager of Banna Ba Kae, Saki Tlotleng says we should not be bystanders anymore.
‘It is time that men stand up. I have a daughter, I’m worried about whom she will marry. When we look at our young people, we see that drugs are taking over their lives. Where are the good men? he asked.
Sgt Kelebogile Trom, the Ikageng SAPS spokesperson says Sector 3 has a high prevalence of rape. She added that gangsterism is rife and new gangs are mushrooming in Ikageng.
Reetsang Motheeletsi from the Department of Education says the ward councillors of the affected wards should attend the prayer service.
The community is encouraged to wear their church regalia.
