North West Premier, Prof Job Mokgoro announced in a virtual Special Provincial Executive Council (EXCO) meeting that was held today, 7 July, that he has tested positive for Covid-19.
Following the passing of North West MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (COGTA), Mothibedi Gordon Kegakilwe, Premier Mokgoro yesterday, 6 July took a test for Covid-19.
According to Vuyisile Ngesi, the spokesperson of the Office of the Premier, Mokgoro received the results today, which confirmed that he was positive for the Coronavirus.
Premier Mokgoro has been in self-isolation since.
“Premier Mokgoro is not incapacitated to carry out his duties as he was only presented with only one symptom -which is cough – although he tested positive,”
He will carry out his duties remotely. A number of the Premier’s support staff who worked with him closely in the past two weeks, have been instructed to get tested and take the necessary precautions.
NW Department of Health has started with contact tracing.
Also, the North West MEC for Public Works and Roads, Saliva Molapisi, has tested positive and is in self-isolation.
“He is not incapacitated to discharge his duties too and actively participated in the virtual Special EXCO meeting concluded earlier today,” said Ngesi.
EXCO plans to write to President Cyril Ramaphosa, to request him to declare MEC Kegakilwe’s funeral as a Provincial Official Funeral.
“As soon as the President has responded to the request, more information regarding the date and venue of the funeral will be made public,” he concluded.
