The National clean-up season is here and the Potchefstroom Chamber of Commerce invites the public, organisations, and businesses to be part of the #ProPotch Clean-Up and Recycle Week, and make a difference in their area.
The #PropPotch Clean-Up and Recycle Week will be from Monday, 14 September until Saturday, 19 September.
As part of Clean-Up and Recycle South Africa week, the Potchefstroom Chamber of Commerce together with the local municipality, organisations, businesses, and community members will be cleaning Potchefstroom.
The aim is to pick up 5000 garbage bags of litter. The focus will also be on the maintenance of road signs, the cutting of grass, and waste removal. The Potchefstroom Chamber of Commerce’s main objective is to create a better future for Potch. They believe that if community members stand together in being part of the solution, a major difference can be made.
Juanita Greyling, Vice-Chairperson of the Potchefstroom Chamber of Commerce said Potchefstroom can be one of the greatest cities in the country but we need to first acknowledge the problem, then be that change we want to see.
“We need the community to work together, encourage change in their neighbourhoods, and to create a positive mindset amongst each other”, said Greyling.
All community members are welcome to become volunteers for this clean-up initiative in a specific area.
The focus will be in the following neighborhoods:
Monday, 14 September: All entry routes towards Potchefstroom. This includes Nelson Mandela Drive, Ross Street, Parys Avenue and Louis le Grange Street.
Tuesday, 15 September: Govan Mbeki Road, Wasgoedspruit next to Chief Albert Luthuli Drive and Van Der Hoff Park.
Wednesday, 16 September: Potchefstroom Central and Mierderpark.
Thursday, 17 September: Potchefstroom Industria and Ikageng.
Friday, 18 September: Parys Avenue and Govan Mbeki Road.
Saturday, 19 September: Trim Park and Govan Mbeki.
The litter collected will all be recycled by Pick-Up Waste and Deswalner Recycling.
According to Charmaine Smit, a board member of the Potchefstroom Chamber of Commerce and project leader of the #ProPotch Clean-Up and Recycle Week, the public’s reaction to the initiative so far has been astonishing and several companies have already agreed to take responsibility and to clean up certain areas.
The Chamber of Commerce further encourages all community members to clean up the areas where they work, live, and play. Also to ensure the litter items collected get recycled.
If you would like to volunteer to clean your specific street or certain areas, collect free garbage bags between 08:00-08:30 at the specific focus area. Volunteers are also encouraged to take before and after photos of the area they will be cleaning, and post it on social media platforms, using the hashtag “#ProPotchCleanUp“.
If you would like to become a volunteer and make a difference, contact Charmaine at 064 635 8759.
