A beloved restauranteur, businessman and well-known Belgian beer aficionado of Potchefstroom, André Jacobs, passed away on 9 September 2021.

The 53-year-old died of Covid-19 in a Potchefstroom hospital on Thursday, after previously being treated at a clinic for his heart.

André ran the very popular Old Grimbeekhuis restaurant and Belgian Beer Bar in Grimbeek Park. He previously lived in Parys but had been living in Potchefstroom for the past few years. It was here that he ran the restaurant and earned the reputation of being one of the friendliest and warmest of people.

His loving wife, Zoë, is still in disbelief, “I am unable to speak at the moment. I just need time for it to all sink in,” she said.

He had a unique personality that touched everyone he came into contact with. His restaurant served quality food and an amazing variety of Belgian beer in the tranquil, nature-filled surroundings.

Many will remember his beautiful flower arrangements and his eye for style.

Tributes of condolence continued to pour in on the restaurant’s Facebook page since the news of his death. Many shared the wonderful memories they have of him. André is survived by his wife, Zoë and their sons.
