“We struggle to breathe”

Parts of Ext. 11 in Ikageng have become an eyesore as illegal dumping areas continue to grow.

Parts of Ext. 11 in Ikageng have become an eyesore as illegal dumping areas continue to grow.

A woman, who asked to remain anonymous, says she took it upon herself to reach out to the municipality when people in her area started complaining.
“They never cease to amaze me.

Every time I call, they say they will soon have it sorted out, yet here we are,” she said.
She adds that illegal dumping is getting out of hand. “We have to ask the community to assist us in cleaning up the area because we seem to be making endless calls without receiving any help.”

The resident explains that the illegal dumping in her area has been a problem since last year.
She has a feeling it will be there for generations to come if they don’t take matters into their own hands.
“I don’t even want to open the window, because the dust and the disgusting smell blows right in,” she said.
“I never used to wake up in the morning feeling congested but now I do.’
“The residents here are suffering, without question.’’
The resident adds that they struggle to breathe around the area because of the dumping site.
“I don’t want to go outside at all because of the dirt.
When it’s windy, it gets much worse. This is not right at all,” she said.
The Herald asked the municipality for comment but had received nothing by the time of going to print.
