Rapist sentenced to life imprisonment

He was found guilty on all the charges of rape, kidnapping and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Thato David Mokgopa (37) was sentenced to life imprisonment for raping a 24-year-old woman in Promosa in October 2014.
According to NW police spokesperson Sgt Amogelang Malwetse, Mokgopa attacked the victim while she was waiting for a taxi at a stop sign.

He was aggressive and asked her to accompany him to an unknown place.

When the victim refused, he threatened her with a knife, dragging her to nearby bushes. He raped her repeatedly through the night. He also assaulted her for resisting.

When Magopa left the following morning, the victim went to the police station to open a case.

“After a thorough police investigation, DNA results linked Mokgopa to the case, and he was arrested in 2017. He was released on bail till his final appearance before the Potchefstroom Regional Court on 7 April 2022.

He was found guilty on all the charges of rape, kidnapping and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
