José de Canha, a local fashion designer, recently accepted an invitation from the Potchefstroom Art Society to reveal his secrets to the art of fashion.
At 18:00 on Wednesday, 10 August, he will present a fashion talk at the Snowflake building, covering various topics, including the latest fashion trends, body types, trends for specific age groups, and the difference be-tween semi-formal and formal wear. The Potchefstroom Art Society invites everyone with a keen interest in fashion to attend the event.
The entrance is free. Attendees will also learn how to up-style old clothes, take an outfit from day to evening and use a basic pattern maker to design their clothes.
According to De Canha, fashion and art have always been inter-twined. “Fashion is an art form. They share the basic design elements – colour, line, compo- sition, and texture,” says José, who moved his studio from Klerksdorp to Potchefstroom in October last year.
“My home has been in Potchefstroom for the past seven years, but I recently decided to move my studio because the constant travelling was a waste of time and money.”
José is a North West School of Design alumnus and is famous for his couture designs worn by contestants of Mrs South Africa, Mrs Globe and Miss International.
One of the highlights of his career was when he was recognised as an international designer, and a television channel from Portugal produced a documentary on his design career.
People interested in attending José De Canha’s fashion talk must book their seats no later than 5 August. They should send an email to potchkuns@gmail.com. Write Fashion talk in the subject block and include your name, surname and the number of people attending.
