Conception to Occupation: A health care facility where every stage of your life matters

The North West MEC of Health, Mr Madoda Sambatha, recently officially opened Potch Health Care (PHC), a new health care facility offering dental, allied health, family medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, emergency and occupational health care services in Potchefstroom.

The North West MEC of Health, Mr Madoda Sambatha, recently officially opened Potch Health Care (PHC), a new health care facility offering dental, allied health, family medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, emergency and occupational health care services in Potchefstroom.

It is the first of its kind to offer such comprehensive services under one roof, including occupational health, which is one area neglected in health. The Covid pandemic highlighted the importance of health and safety at work, a legacy to carry forward.
PHC’s multidisciplinary approach points towards optimum service for the community.

Depending on the diagnosis, the best treatment plan may require the intervention of allied health practitioners like dietetics provided by Ms Cornel Joubert, physiotherapy by Ms Dipuo Enele, psychology by Dr S Thekiso or social work by Ms M Mampholo. This multidisciplinary approach at PHC also includes referrals to Dr Charles Echelu, an eye specialist, and Dr Tshepo Mosito, the dentist.

“This facility offers community members the opportunity to receive multidisciplinary healthcare at one facility, and with us, every stage of your life matters. Therefore, this facility is grounded in the vision for total health care throughout the life stages of people in Potchefstroom, hence our motto conception to occupation,” conveys the founder of PHC, Dr Peter Rapula Siko.

Dr Siko focuses on family medicine, obstetrics and gynaecology, and occupational health. He is a specialist family physician with a Master of Medicine from Wits University, a diploma in Obstetrics (RSA) and a diploma in Occupational Health. Regarding the setting for occupational health services, Dr Siko says, “Accidents occur at the workplace despite improvements in health and safety; every occupation has health or safety risks.”

He further advises, “Remember that employers are also employees, equally affected by OHSA”. PHC provides pre-medical, periodic and exit medical examinations to employees. In addition, as part of the occupational health services, he provides health information and advice to employers about a safe and healthy working environment for employees. The facility has hearing, eye and lung testing (spirometry) equipment. This facility is easily accessible for all clients, including people with disabilities. PHC provides parking space at Eb’s Hardware parking area.

The reception and waiting areas at PHC are unique, modern, inviting, and colourful. The team, Mavis, Lerato and Kele, are committed to providing a welcoming reception and being helpful. For parents with children, there is a child-friendly area with natural light, colourfully painted walls and artificial grass. This will make visiting the doctor with your child much easier and more pleasant.

“As a team, we are passionate about our work and the community. We are committed to respect for our patients, irrespective of their financial status, race, gender, ethnicity, religion or sexual orientation. We are also committed to Batho Pele principles,” concludes Dr Siko.

Our future includes providing training for nursing and medical students and the provision of private deliveries for clients who cannot afford private hospital fees and want to relieve the public services, which are already overburdened with patient loads.

The MEC congratulated Dr Siko and his team and applauded them for the work they continue to do in meeting the health needs of the community.
