Dassierand resident concerned about newly formed dumping site

If you drive on the Dassierand road to Promosa, you will find an illegal dumping site on the corner of Chief Albert Luthuli and Hennie Swanepoel streets.

Since encountering someone in the act of dumping this year, Thato Sekoto, a resident of the area, quickly worried that the place would soon turn into an ongoing illegal dumping site. A few days after his first encounter, Thato says he saw two or three more cars dumping their waste.

“We asked them to stop before it gets out of hand, and they have agreed, but it seems the dumping site is slowly growing,” Thato lamented.

“It’s as if they tell each other where to dump their garden and home refuse. We plead with people to stop being ignorant and dump their rubbish at official dumping sites.” Thato suspects the site is being caused by people travelling to Promosa or members of the newly- established informal settlement.

“We have been living here for years, and a dumping site has never been a cause for concern. “I worry that this place will soon get out of hand. I hope the municipality will assist us before we get there,” he conclud-ed. As a result of the Herald’s enquiry about the issue, municipal worker Antonello Vertyn was sent onsite to clean the area in the early hours of Wednesday, 18 January.

He hopes that residents will assist the municipality in to keeping the area clean. Tshidihane Motaug, who has been a Dassierand resident for 10 years, was driving past when he came across Vertyn cleaning the site.

“We are extremely grateful to the municipality for acting on this issue. The things being disposed of here not only make the area filthy, but they are also a danger to our health,” he concluded.
