Perseverance and passion have always gone hand in hand for Bontle Khambule (22), a former Ikageng resident and BA Seobi Secondary School matriculant.
It is those qualities that has shaped Bontle’s journey from humble beginnings to limitless opportunities as part of the Engen Graduate Development Programme, where she is currently working in the company’s Human Resources department in Cape Town.
“Not a day goes by that I don’t learn something. I really enjoy learning and my co-workers have really helped me along the way. Working with people is my passion and I am grateful to be in this position,” says Bontle.
It is this thirst for learning that has driven her since grade 10 when she realised where he passions were in the job sphere.
“I knew I wanted to work with people in a professional workplace. Human Resources was a really interesting and rewarding prospect for me,” states Bontle, who completed matric with two distinctions as well as the highest pass rate in History in her matric class.
Next for Bontle was a BA Industrial and Organisational Psychology degree at the NWU and this further opened up the doors that would lead to the Engen internship. Engen’s Graduate Development Programme offers recent graduates, valuable work experience across a broad range of business functions.
“Last year I was busy with an internship at the NWU Vaal Campus and one of my friends suggested that I apply for an internship on the Student Room website.”
The rest as they say is history.
Bontle’s greatest inspiration is her mother, Caroline, who has been a rock for her through highs and lows.
“My life and the person I have become has been influenced by my mother’s unwavering support in whatever I do. She has witnessed me at my best, worst, and greatest moments, and no matter what was happening to me, her eyes always shone with pride. When I begin to crumble, she never fails to put me back together.”
In her free time, Bontle enjoys sightseeing and doing activities around Cape Town to relax.
“I really enjoy walks on the beach and doing various things that was not possible back home. It’s a chance to experience more of life,” she adds excitedly.
This ambitious young lady is not shy to encourage others to believe in their dreams, no matter where you come from.
“You should know what you want and go for it. If you are motivated enough, you will get your chance. Just keep your eye on the prize.”
