Cupcakes of Hope Hosts 13th National Cupcake Day
Cupcakes of Hope invites South Africans to support National Cupcake Day on September 27 at malls nationwide to raise funds for children with cancer.
For the 13th year running, childhood cancer NGO Cupcakes of Hope (CoH) is preparing to host its flagship fundraiser, National Cupcake Day (NCD), taking place on Saturday, 27 September 2025.
The event will be hosted at 79 malls across South Africa, where the public can enjoy a home-baked cupcake in exchange for a small donation of R10–R20. Each contribution goes directly towards helping CoH support children affected by cancer. In Potchefstroom Cupcakes will be sold at the Mooiriver Mall on September 27.
In 2024, National Cupcake Day raised more than R2 million, thanks to nearly 2,000 volunteer bakers affectionately known as Cupcake Angels who pledged over 114,000 cupcakes, with sales happening at 74 malls nationwide.
“Cupcake Angels are the backbone of our organisation,” says CoH founder, Sandy Cipriano. “They dedicate their time, energy and resources to bake the most incredible creations, which the public can then enjoy while helping children with cancer. They truly deserve their title.”
CoH patron, Dr. Natasché Daniels, who was diagnosed with cancer at 15, urges South Africans to get involved:
“Small things such as baking or buying cupcakes can make an enormous difference in a child’s life. Be the miracle in somebody else’s story.”
Elri Mienie, NCD Project Manager and cancer survivor herself, adds: “Giving back through this campaign is my greatest joy. The generosity of South Africans, even in tough times, continues to inspire us.”
The impact of this support is significant. In 2024 alone, CoH fulfilled 2,568 financial support requests, delivered 3,022 activity care bags to more than 21 paediatric oncology wards, and celebrated 111 patient birthdays.
For those unable to attend NCD in person, CoH’s 13-year partnership with Mugg & Bean provides another way to contribute. This year, a special range of cupcakes featuring flavours such as Passion Fruit, Peanut Butter Caramel, and the Muggles Cupcake will be sold in stores, with R2 from every cupcake donated to CoH.
“Every cupcake enjoyed is a step towards hope,” says Cipriano. “We invite families to support their nearest mall on September 27 and help us bring joy to children fighting cancer.”
