Potch motorists still filling up ahead of fuel increase

Motorists are still filling up ahead of the fuel price increase that comes into effect at midnight.

Potchefstroom motorists and road users have been filling up today at various petrol stations across the city, before the major national increase comes into effect tomorrow (April 1).

The Minister of Finance, Enoch Godongwana announced a temporary R3 per litre fuel levy reduction today (Wednesday, 31 March). This after backlash from numerous political parties and institutions.

“We understand that for many South Africans, the over R7 increase in diesel and R2 increase in petrol prices will seriously damage budgets and affect business decisions,” stated DA spokesperson on finance, Dr. Mark Burke.

The temporary measure will be enforced from 1 April to 5 May 2026. This means that petrol will see a R 3,06 increase and diesel a R 7,37 increase during this period.

Last week, it was announced that fuel prices could skyrocket to R7 per litre increase on petrol and R10 increase on diesel.

New petrol and diesel prices:

93 Petrol: R23.25
95 Petrol: R23.36
Diesel 0.05% (Wholesale): R25.90
Diesel 0.005% (Wholesale): R26.11
