Police seize illegal firearms and ammunition in Ikageng
A man was arrested after various firearms and ammunition was found in his possession.
A 40-year-old man is expected to appear in court after police seized firearms and ammunition during an intelligence-driven operation in Ikageng near Potchefstroom in the early hours of Friday, April 24.
According to police spokesperson Sergeant Kelebogile Morake, search warrants were obtained after information gathered by North-West Crime Intelligence Covert Operations was analysed.
“This led to a coordinated operation involving the Provincial Anti-Gang Unit and Crime Intelligence.”
Morake said officers executed the warrants at a premises in Ikageng where they recovered a rifle with a magazine, a replica blow pistol and a magazine loaded with blank rounds.
“The suspect was subsequently arrested and charged with the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition,” Morake confirmed.
He is expected to appear before the Potchefstroom Magistrates’ Court soon.
Acting North West Provincial Commissioner, Major General Dr. Ryno Naidoo, praised the team for the successful operation, highlighting the role of intelligence-led policing in tackling crime. He also reiterated the importance of removing illegal firearms from communities as part of ongoing efforts to improve safety.
