The gift of sight: Mediclinic Potchefstroom restores vision through community outreach
Thirty pro bono procedures for ophthalmology patients will be undertaken over the next three weeks.
There is a sparkle in the eyes of renowned ophthalmologist Dr Harold Letsoalo when he explains why he loves helping people with their sight.
“I’ve done many of these types of eye surgery cases pro bono. From when I was a student till now, I continue to do it. So, it’s something I do from the heart.” Being a doctor provides an opportunity to help those in need, and that is exactly what Dr Letsoalo and his team at Mediclinic Potchefstroom are doing during October in Eye Care Awareness Month. Thirty pro bono procedures for ophthalmology patients will be undertaken over the next three weeks.

On October 9 the first 10 patients arrived at Mediclinic from Potchefstroom Provincial Hospital, excited about the opportunity to see clearly again following cataract removal surgery.
Juanita Kirsten, one of the patients, said she was very content knowing that she was in good hands and had the opportunity to see clearly again after being in a car accident.
Livina Lindeque said she could not wait to start reading again after the operation.
“I enjoy reading war-related books,” she said with a smile. “I will be able to do things on my own again,” said Anna Assegaai (69). “The minute you start the journey with the patient, you engage and you see the suffering the patient is going through. The most rewarding part is post-surgery, where they can have a better quality of life,” added Dr Letsoalo.
The general manager of Mediclinic Potchefstroom, Danie Scholtz, explained that they had contacted the North West Department of Health to assist with a backlog of cases.
“We want to assist and play a part in bettering lives. We were pleased to get the green light and to do these simple procedures that will improve quality of life.”
