Varsity Cup: Teams can convert a try with another try in new NFL-style rule
Teams will have two try-conversion options in this year's Varsity Cup. The traditional two-point kicking conversion as well as a new 5 point try-conversion, where teams have two minutes to score an additional try from the 22-metre line.
The Varsity Cup will implement new post-try rules for the upcoming 2026 edition that are sure to shake up the action on the field.
This rule is slightly similar to the NFL (American football) in the United States, where teams can choose to double their points after a touchdown with a two-point running conversion instead of going for a one-point kicking conversion.
Varsity Cup teams will this year have an opportunity to convert their try with a tap-restart inside the 22-metre area. Teams will have 20 seconds after a try has been scored to decide their conversion option.
If a team scores a try in the allocated two-minute timeframe, they can score an additional five points, instead of a regular conversion kick, which would amount to two points.
The tap-restart is a risky but rewarding option for teams. Not only is there a chance to miss out on two points, but the opposition can also turn the ball over and, in the two minutes, have an opportunity to score a five-point try of their own.
Teams also cannot take line-outs or scrums during this two-minute tap period. Play will only stop if time expires or the ball goes dead (knocked on, or if the attacking team concedes a penalty).
Fitness of the players will also be brought into the spotlight, as this extra two minutes will increase the non-stop action, whereas a traditional conversion gives players a breather.
Teams also cannot attempt a drop goal during this period.
Teams can take the tap-conversion option twice in each half. After the two-minute time period has expired, teams will return for a traditional restart from the halfway line.
