Space Race

Create the illusion of space in a small room.

  1. Paint the walls, ceiling and woodwork in the same color to blur the edges and give the illusion of more space.
  2. Place a large rug underneath the furniture in a room to draw the eye wider.
  3. Leave some shelf space free  to stop things looking and feeling cluttered. You don’t need to tightly pack every shelf of a bookcase in a room.
  4. Keep your interiors simple: a few pieces of unfussy furniture creates a cleaner look and frees up floor space.
  5. Choose upholstery in solid plain colours instead of bold prints; rather use texture for interest. Always hang ceiling to floor curtains.
  6. Declutter regularly: it’s amazing how quickly you can fill up a home. Ask yourself if you would buy the item now and if not, let it go. Being ruthless is hard but it’s essential.
  7. Do a proper spring clean at least once a year.
  8. Storage is key: give items their own places in drawers, boxes or baskets. Don’t let things pile up on the floor and keep tables and surfaces clear of clutter.
  9. Lighting is so important if you want to create a sense of space in your home. Dark, heavy curtains make a room appear smaller so opt for soft drapes or wooden blinds instead. Well-placed mirrors work well too as they bounce light around a room and naturally create an illusion of space.
  10. In a small bathroom, choose a clear, frameless shower door so you can see the wall at the back of the shower; this seems like a tiny difference but it makes a big difference.
