Friends of Golden Harvest Park set to host a clean-up in May

GOLDEN HARVEST PARK – FOGHP and Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo forge a relationship to ensure the success of this green area.

The relationship between the Friends of Golden Harvest Park (FOGHP) and the Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo has yielded improved results over the past years.

These include the safety as well as the community taking ownership of the park.

The FOGHP regularly holds meetings with ward councillor Dalu Cele and other stakeholders.

It is done in order to track the progress of the recent initiatives between Metro police, private security companies, Honeydew Police Station and Cele.

Pippa Wepener from the FOGHP advised park users that visiting hours were from 6am to 6pm.

“We warn visitors that the gates may be locked outside of these hours and are currently attaching signs to the gates stating the times and contact numbers visitors can call in the event of an emergency,” Wepener said.

FOGHP will also hold a bi-annual clean-up on 6 May.

“Gloves and litter bags will be supplied and we urge residents of the area to come along with friends and family to help clean up, help remove invading alien plants that are overwhelming parts of the park and engulfing indigenous growth and then stay around for a picnic or a braai,” she said.

They will subsequently hold the annual general meeting at the park at 10am on 20 May and are inviting all members to attend.

Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo stakeholder public relations and media relations officer, Noeleen Mattera confirmed this beneficial relationship.

Mattera said, “We facilitate a steering committee with the ward councillor and seven security companies. JCPZ and the security companies signed a Memorandum of Agreement whereby they have volunteered to regularly patrol the park at no cost at all.”

Security companies involved in the relationship include Londoloza Protection Group, CSS Protection cc T/A Community Support Services, Chubb, ADT, SOS, Gauteng Protection and Ingelosi Security.

The entity’s park rangers, Metro police and other police officers also regularly patrol the park which has resulted in criminal activities declining considerably with fewer reports of vagrancy and possible muggings.

“Breakout Events Company has a series of events in the park which take place on the last Sunday of each month to promote positive usage of the park,” concluded Mattera.
